Isaiah 5:20: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
As a pro-family organization, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms (NYCF) supports wholesome community events geared toward families with young children. We also support kids’ events that promote reading.
We do not, however, support Drag Queen Story Hour.
According to its own website, Drag Queen Story Hour:
“is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real.”
These words make it abundantly clear that the purpose of the Drag Queen Story Hour is to normalize transgenderism in the minds of children. (One approving mother has reported that the event had its desired effect on her daughter.)
In January 2018, NYCF’s affiliate organization, New Yorker’s Family Research Foundation (NYFRF), spoke out against a Drag Queen Story Hour that was held in the Broome County Public Library in Binghamton, New York. On August 7, a Drag Queen Story Hour was held at the main branch of the Albany Public Library. While the library did receive negative feedback from the public concerning the event, Scott Jarzombek, executive director of the Albany Public Library system, stood firm; according to Mr. Jarzombek, “‘this is a part of our community we want to welcome.’” Mr. Jarzombek also noted that the event is “‘not mandatory. No one is being forced to go.’”
Mr. Jarzombek’s comment misses the point. Public libraries are funded by taxpayers. As taxpayer-funded institutions, public libraries ought to ensure that the events they sponsor are beneficial to the public. Drag Queen Story Hour does not fit that profile. Given that homosexual behavior is sinful, “unabashedly queer role models” are harmful—not helpful—to children. Furthermore, the entire “transgender” movement is based on the delusion that sex and gender identity are matters of personal choice. In reality, a person’s sex is not “assigned at birth,” as “transgender” advocates often contend; rather, it is assigned long before birth by an authority much higher than any person or government. When a person adopts a “transgender” identity, that person rebels against God; in essence, that person is attempting to assert his own authority over his God-given gender identity. Presenting “transgender” behavior to children does not accomplish anything good; in fact, it may instead introduce confusion about sex and gender into their impressionable minds.
NYCF speaks out against Drag Queen Story Hour because we stand for the truth that God created each person male and female. Persons who believe the lie that they can change their sex sometimes take drastic, irreversible actions in a futile effort to “become” a member of the opposite sex. Out of compassion for impressionable children and persons with gender dysphoria, Christians should speak the truth about sex and gender so that people will not be deceived into taking actions that they may profoundly regret.
