Late last month, pro-life sidewalk counselors won an important court battle before a federal judge.
WORLD Magazine reports that then-Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, an ardent supporter of Planned Parenthood who resigned his post earlier this year amidst allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault, filed a lawsuit in June 2017 against 13 pro-life individuals who pray, preach, and distribute literature outside Choices Medical Clinic in Queens, New York. Then-Attorney General Schneiderman alleged that the counselors had engaged in “harassment, physical obstruction, and threats of violence against women seeking abortions [and] the volunteers escorting them to the door.”
On Friday, July 20, a federal judge declined to grant a preliminary injunction against the pro-life counselors. The counselors’ attorney, Martin Cannon of the Thomas More Society, told WORLD that “the state’s accusations of force or threats of force were based on incidents initiated by the facility’s volunteer escorts.” Cannon added, “‘The case was an abuse of the rights of peaceful New York citizens.’” The judge also ruled that some evidence offered by the state was unreliable. It appears unlikely that the judge’s preliminary ruling will be reversed on appeal.
New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms thanks the Lord for this victory, and for the steadfastness of the pro-life counselors in this case. Peaceful pro-life efforts like this truly do save lives.
