Matthew 19:4-6: “And [Jesus] answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
As New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms works in Albany to influence legislation and legislators for the Lord Jesus Christ, we seek to exert influence in four distinct policy areas: Protecting human life, promoting strong families, preserving religious liberty, and proclaiming justice and mercy.
Promoting strong families is a vitally important part of our legislative agenda because it is a vitally important part of God’s creative intent for mankind. After creating the heavens and the Earth, the Lord’s first official act was to create a family unit (Genesis 2). The Scriptures are filled with admonitions to respect the institution of marriage (Exodus 20:14; Matthew 19:6), to avoid divorce except in certain specific circumstances (Matthew 5:32, I Corinthians 7:15), and to raise children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Proverbs 22:6, Ephesians 6:4). Furthermore, many of the challenges and crises facing the state and the nation are closely connected to the grievous family breakdown that has become prevalent through the twin trends of out-of-wedlock parenting and divorce. In December 2019, the Pew Research Center reported that the percentage of U.S. children living in single-parent households (23%) was the highest such percentage in the world.
In light of the marriage crisis in our society (and the impact of that crisis upon children’s health and well-being), NYCF advocates legislative and non-legislative efforts to promote marriage and responsible fatherhood, and to educate parents on the devastating impact of divorce upon children. Because children whose parents are not able to raise them also need loving homes, NYCF strongly supports measures to increase adoption—particularly adoption by married couples. To put it simply, a society that willfully ignores God’s design for the family cannot expect to thrive.
