As the Supreme Court of the United States considers the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms (NYCF) and our allies at Family Policy Alliance (FPA) are preparing Christians for the Court’s decision next summer. If the Court overturns its disastrous abortion decision in Roe v. Wade (1973) and allows states to set their own abortion policies, what happens next?
NYCF and FPA envision a future where the lives of the unborn are protected in all 50 states. In many states, abortion would be banned if Roe were overturned. Sadly, however, New York is not one of those states. If Roe were overturned tomorrow, New York would remain a pro-abortion state. New York legalized elective abortions in 1970 and further liberalized its abortion laws with the passage of the Reproductive Health Act (RHA) in 2019. New York lacks any requirement of parental involvement for abortions involving minor children, and our state is one of 16 states that fund elective abortions through Medicaid. Shockingly, the RHA repealed a requirement that all abortions be performed by physicians; Gov. Kathy Hochul has hinted that she intends to push for regulations allowing non-physicians to perform abortions. Ending legal abortion in New York will be a long-term project.
Together with our pro-life allies, and with the help of the Lord, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms blocked the passage of abortion expansion legislation in New York from 2007 to 2019. Today, we continue to fight to protect pro-life pregnancy centers from onerous state mandates that could jeopardize their efforts. We also push for policies that support and promote life-affirming alternatives like adoption. In a post-Roe world, NYCF would continue to work against harmful abortion proposals and to lay the groundwork for a future that does not include abortion.
If you share our vision of a pro-life New York and a pro-life nation, please visit AfterRoe.com. Spearheaded by the Family Policy Alliance, the After Roe campaign aims to support pro-life citizens to stand for life on the frontlines of their own states. This involves 1) educating citizens about what a Roe overturn would really mean, 2) mobilizing them to take action after Roe, and 3) preparing to have a truly pro-life world after Roe. The site prominently features an interactive map with easy-to-understand explanations of abortion’s legal status in each state. Furthermore, Christians can indicate their willingness to help on a national level by signing the After Roe pledge. Pledge-signers will be among the first to hear from Family Policy Alliance about key action opportunities for life. This After Roe team will be equipped with information on pro-life events, breaking news, educational opportunities, grassroots mobilization, and more.
Even before Roe ends, the work of After Roe has already begun in New York. Please visit AfterRoe.com today.
