President Donald Trump Issues Executive Order on Religious Liberty

Washington, DC – Today, President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring that it is the policy of his administration to vigorously protect religious liberty. Rev. Jason J. McGuire, Executive Director of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, made the following remarks:

“President Donald Trump’s executive order on religious liberty is an important step in the right direction for the United States of America. In addition to affirming his administration’s commitment to religious liberty, the President’s order expresses willingness to consider new regulations that would provide faith-based organizations with relief from the anti-life Obamacare birth control mandate. Given that American Christians have spent the past eight years under the thumb of an administration that was often hostile to religious freedom, President Trump’s order represents a welcome shift in tone.”

“While New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms appreciates the President’s order, we also recognize that it is only an incremental step. To fully free faith-based organizations from the pernicious impact of Obamacare, it will be necessary to repeal and replace the law. Additionally, today’s order is silent regarding photographers, bakers, florists, and others who face losing their livelihoods if they do not adhere to governmental mandates that violate their deeply-held religious convictions. Accordingly, NYCF calls upon Congress to match President Trump’s commitment to religious liberty by passing the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA) or similar legislation.”

“While we welcome the signing of today’s Executive Order, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms calls on President Trump and his administration to continue to promote and protect religious freedom, both here and abroad. As the President said in the Rose Garden this morning, ‘For too long, the federal government has used the power of the state as a weapon against people of faith, bullying and even punishing Americans for following their religious beliefs.’ Today’s actions represent a start towards reversing this unwarranted government discrimination, and New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms will continue to work for a New York and an America where religious freedom flourishes.”
