NYCF Congratulates Neil Gorsuch On His Confirmation

Today, the United States Senate voted, 54-45, to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch as the newest Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Rev. Jason J. McGuire, Executive Director of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, made the following remarks:

“New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms congratulates Judge Neil Gorsuch on his confirmation to the Supreme Court of the United States. Judge Gorsuch has earned a well-deserved reputation as a judge that follows the language of the law and the original intent of the Framers of the Constitution in rendering his decisions. Our nation badly needs Supreme Court Justices who uphold these basic principles, and who resist the temptation to legislate from the bench. Given Judge Gorsuch’s exemplary qualifications, any other result of today’s vote would have been absurd.”

Rev. McGuire continued, “The confirmation process that led to today’s vote has raised concerns. Partisan bickering by embittered Senate liberals led to an extremely rare attempt to filibuster the Gorsuch nomination. Because the vast majority of Democratic Members of the U.S. Senate backed this filibuster, the Gorsuch nomination did not receive the 60 votes that were needed to end the filibuster and reach the Senate floor. Senate Republican leadership was then left with a difficult choice: Accept the defeat of the Gorsuch nomination or change the Senate rules to eliminate filibusters of Supreme Court nominees. The Democrats’ tactic backfired; the Senate voted to change the rules, and Judge Gorsuch’s nomination then proceeded to a floor vote. NYCF salutes the U.S. Senate for staying the course on the Gorsuch nomination and refusing to give in to the petty and divisive behavior of Sen. Schumer and his allies.”
