If you were a Member of the New York City Council, what would your priorities be? Where would you focus your attention?
At New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, we can think of several matters that a Member of the City Council could prioritize. One is the shameful condition of New York City’s public housing projects. Another is the opioid crisis. A third is working with the State to fix the City’s shaky mass transit system, which makes life difficult for working New Yorkers. Getting the City’s thousands of homeless youth off the streets should also be a priority. Last, and most importantly, New York City’s abortion rate remains appallingly high.
On September 12, 2018, the New York City Council passed a bill that addresses a very different issue: Creating a “third gender option” on New York City birth certificates. According to the New York Daily News, the bill will allow New Yorkers who do not identify as male or female to change their birth certificates to reflect their self-identification; such persons will be able to identify their sex as “X” instead of “male” or “female.” Apparently, “[the] X option is aimed at recognizing New Yorkers who identify as gender non-conforming or nonbinary, meaning they can have multiple genders or none at all.” New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson sponsored the bill, and Mayor Bill de Blasio—an enthusiastic supporter—is expected to sign it.
In addition to being dishonest (there are only two genders) and being bad public policy (encouraging gender confusion), this new bill is a complete waste of time.
