Influencing Legislation and Legislators for the Lord Jesus Christ.

For NYCF, It’s A New World

The Democratic Party won a decisive majority in the New York State Senate last week.

The Democrats’ Senate victory means that New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms’ efforts to influence legislation for the Lord Jesus Christ are entering a new stage. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has promised to pass abortion expansion legislation within the first 30 days of the 2019 legislative session. The governor will now have a staunch ally in the Senate Majority Leader’s Office: Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, who has advocated for abortion expansion for more than 10 years. Other bills on the Left’s wish list include recreational marijuana legalization, the Bathroom Bill, and socialized medicine. Many of the newly-elected state senators are avowed leftists who won election by promising to support measures like these. In past years, we have been able to work with Senate Republicans—and a few socially conservative Senate Democrats—to block a good deal of anti-life and anti-family bills in Albany. The new Democratic Senate majority will require a new approach. In addition to educating and encouraging legislators who are inclined to agree with us, we must now persuade those who strongly disagree with us to reconsider their views.

To put it bluntly, the Left’s plans for New York are an unmitigated disaster. With staunch liberals in control of both houses of the Legislature, the battles that face NYCF next year will be harder than any battles we have fought since the organization was founded in 1982. Thankfully, we are not required to fight these battles in our own strength:

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us” (Psalm 62:5-8).
