On October 14, 2021, Emily’s List—a political action committee that helps elect pro-abortion women to political office—endorsed Gov. Kathy Hochul for election in 2022.
Founded in 1985, Emily’s List has endorsed high-profile candidates like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The word “Emily” in “Emily’s List” is an acronym for “Early Money Is Like Yeast.”
According to The New York Times, the endorsement “opens doors to deep-pocketed donors…across the country. But for [Gov. Hochul], it may prove more valuable as an early stamp of approval for female activists, donors and operatives as she attempts to freeze out potential rivals and head off a raucous Democratic primary next year.” The Times found it noteworthy that Emily’s List came out with an early endorsement while other left-leaning potential candidates—including New York Attorney General Letitia James—were still deciding whether to run for governor next year. Many other liberal-leaning groups have held off on committing to Gov. Hochul until they know which other candidates will enter the race. The Times also pointed out that Gov. Hochul has moved quickly to raise money and gain supporters in an attempt to discourage other Democrats from challenging her next year.
Since becoming governor, Gov. Hochul has stated her support for abortion loudly, clearly, and repeatedly. At a recent women’s march, the Governor said: “‘While I’m still alive as your first female governor ever in the State of New York, I will protect [abortion] rights, I will make that torch glow even brighter before I pass it on to the next generation and together we’ll send a message across this nation – you come to New York, we’ll protect your abortion rights every single day of the week.’” Gov. Hochul’s pledge of undying support for abortion has helped her land a key endorsement. Sadly, it also reveals the depth of her moral and spiritual confusion.
