Since the Supreme Court of the United States released its history-making decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on June 24, 2022, Gov. Kathy Hochul has been busy working to promote abortion access here in New York.
The day the Dobbs decision was announced, Gov. Hochul kicked off a comprehensive public education campaign concerning abortion rights. The Governor commented, “‘Let me be clear: the Supreme Court has failed us, but New York State will not. Our Abortion Access Always campaign builds on efforts to ensure that everyone knows that abortions remain safe, legal, and accessible here. As long as I am Governor, this State will protect you.’” The new website “includes details on abortion rights, providers, treatment options, and resources for mental health support and payment” and is available in 12 languages.
On July 1, 2022, with Gov. Hochul’s support, the State Legislature passed the so-called Equality Amendment, which—if re-passed by the Legislature next year and approved by New York voters—would enshrine abortion rights in the New York State Constitution.
On July 12, Gov. Hochul announced that the state would provide New York abortion providers with $25 million in taxpayer funds to help them expand their operations. The Governor asserted that additional demand for abortion from pregnant women from states with pro-life laws justified this expenditure. According to Gov. Hochul, $10 million has been furnished to 13 organizations already. The $25 million expenditure follows a previous state expenditure of $35 million to help abortion providers.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has made it very clear that New York will continue to be a pro-abortion state as long as she is our governor. New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms encourages pro-life New Yorkers to remember this on Election Day.
