On Tuesday, February 24, two pro-life bills received cloture votes in the United States Senate. Those two bills were the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (BAASPA) and another bill that would have banned abortions performed upon unborn babies who have reached a gestational age of 20 or more weeks.
Sadly, the votes failed, leaving both late-term unborn babies and born-alive abortion survivors without the crucial protections contained within the two bills.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (E-KY) commented, “‘If my Democratic colleagues block the Senate from even proceeding to debate this legislation, the message they will send will be chilling and clear… Every senator will be able to take a clear moral stand.’” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called the votes “‘show votes’” and “‘shameless political stunts’” being used by Senate Republicans to “‘pander to the hard right.’”
According to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), the lead sponsor of the 20-week ban, “‘These pieces of legislation will continue to be advanced until they pass.’”
New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms thanks the U.S. Senate’s Republican leadership for allowing these bills to receive cloture votes, while we also condemn votes cast by Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) that blocked the measure from advancing. We look forward to the day when protecting the most vulnerable among us will no longer be controversial.
