Colorado Again Comes After Christian Cakebaker

Matthew 5:10-12: “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”

Back in June, in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled (7-2) in favor of Christian cakebaker Jack Phillips. Phillips was accused of discriminating against a same-sex couple because he declined to design and bake a cake for their same-sex “wedding.” In its decision, the high court ruled that states may not enforce their laws in a manner that is hostile to religion.

Apparently, the misleadingly-named Colorado Civil Rights Commission (CCRC) didn’t get the memo.

On June 28, the CCRC found probable cause to believe that Masterpiece Cakeshop had discriminated against a “transgender” person in June 2017 when the Cakeshop declined to design and bake a cake celebrating that person’s so-called gender transition.

In response, Phillips’s attorneys at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) have sued the State of Colorado, contending that the state “‘has been on a crusade to crush [Phillips] because its officials despise what he believes and how he practices his faith.’”

According to pro-family thought leader Maggie Gallagher, lesbian activist and former Commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chai Feldblum once said that in cases where sexual liberty and religious liberty collide, she “‘[had] a hard time coming up with any case in which religious liberty should win.’” While Feldblum’s candor is notable, her perspective is chilling. Sadly, that perspective has become mainstream on the American left.

At New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, we believe that when a constitutionally protected right like the free exercise of religion comes into conflict with the LGBT agenda, religious liberty should win every time. Our public support and prayers are with Jack Phillips and his attorneys at ADF.
