Earlier this month, Chelsea Clinton—the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State and U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton—spoke at a “Rise Up for Roe” event. As you might expect, Chelsea delivered remarks that mirror her parents’ unfortunate support for abortion. However, Chelsea drew negative attention to herself by making an economic argument in support of legal abortion.
Here’s what Chelsea had to say:
It is not a disconnected fact … that American women entering the labor force from 1973 to 2009 added three and a half trillion dollars to our economy. Right? The net, new entrance of women – that is not disconnected from the fact that Roe became the law of the land in January of 1973… Of course, I would hope that [people] would care about [women’s] equal rights and dignity to make our own choices – but, if that is not sufficiently persuasive, hopefully, come some of these other arguments that you’ve expressed so beautifully, will be.
In essence, Chelsea takes the position that the supposed economic benefits of abortion provide additional justification for its legality.
While New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms is skeptical of Chelsea Clinton’s claim that abortion helped the economy, we want to make one thing abundantly clear: It doesn’t matter. Even if abortion could make every American fabulously wealthy, it is still a violent, horrible act that should be banned. Every child, born or unborn, is a precious gift from God. It is chilling that Chelsea Clinton (or anyone else) would believe that any amount of money could justify the taking of one child’s life, let alone the loss of tens of millions of lives due to abortion.
