“But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ” (II Corinthians 11:3).
The secular left’s ongoing campaign to reshape the United States in its image is conducted on multiple fronts, including politics, the courts, education, and the media. Of course, one very important avenue through which to effect social change is the culture: Music, art, television, and film. Some of the Left’s most effective work has been cultural. It is no accident that when former Vice President Joe Biden announced his support for same-sex marriage in 2012, he stated that popular sitcom “Will & Grace” had “probably [done] more to educate the American public [about homosexuality] than almost anything anybody [had] done so far.”
A recently-released film entitled ‘Boy Erased’ is another example of the left’s cultural campaign. The film is designed to manipulate viewers to see sexual orientation change efforts as bogus so that they will support the nationwide push to pass Counselor Coercion bills. The film is based on a book by a young man who states that his parents sent him to a program to overcome his homosexual attractions. According to Peter Sprigg at Family Research Council, the film misrepresented the work that people actually do to overcome homosexuality and added “completely fabricated” elements to the man’s story; one such fictional element involved a client being beaten with a Bible.
At New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, we believe that no one with a strong basis for their viewpoint must resort to deception to win an argument. The truth that some people have overcome homosexuality may be unpalatable to the left, but it is the truth nonetheless.
