Assembly Again Passes Abortion Expansion

Disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer started pushing abortion expansion in 2007. Gov. Andrew Cuomo started pushing it in 2013, connecting abortion expansion to nine other measures in a failed attempt to force it down the throats of the New York State Senate. In spite of New York’s permissive abortion laws and horrendous abortion rate, some pro-abortion legislators are continuing their misguided quest to demolish the few shreds of sanity in New York’s abortion policies.

On June 7, the New York State Assembly passed abortion expansion legislation (A.6221-Glick) by a vote of 92-50. In spite of determined, principled opposition from New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms and other pro-life allies, the Assembly has passed this bill or similar legislation several times. While this result is disappointing, there is good news. During the abortion expansion debate, some pro-life Members of the Assembly dared to speak the terrible truth about abortion. Asm. David DiPietro (R-East Aurora), a staunchly pro-life Christian, made a clear, reasoned case against abortion expansion. Along with the facts about fetal development, Asm. DiPietro offered his colleagues Biblical truth. Later, first-year Asm. Ronald Castorina Jr. (R-Staten Island) delivered a passionate plea for the unborn, decrying the sky-high frequency with which African-American children lose their lives at the hands of abortionists. Asms. Marc Butler (R-Newport) and Ray Walter (R-Amherst) also spoke out against abortion expansion.

New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms is thankful for the Assemblymembers who spoke the truth about abortion expansion on the Assembly floor, and for the 50 Members of the Assembly who voted against Bill A.6221-Glick. In particular, NYCF appreciates the 10 brave Assembly Democrats—Asms. John Ceretto (D-Lewiston), William Colton (D-Brooklyn), Marcos Crespo (D-Bronx), Michael Cusick (D-Staten Island), Mark Gjonaj (D-Bronx), Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn), Mickey Kearns (D-Buffalo), Michael Miller (D-Queens), Robin Schimminger (D-Kenmore), and Michael Simanowitz (D-Queens)—who broke ranks to do the right thing. NYCF also appreciates the principled New York voters who encourage their state legislators to stand for life. Finally, we are thankful that abortion expansion has no future in the State Senate in 2016.
