Abortion Expansion Fails Again

In April 2007, then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer introduced the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act (RHAPP), declaring that “‘New York State [would] continue to be a beacon of civil rights and protection of women’s rights.’” The RHAPP would have guaranteed a fundamental “right” to abortion at any point in a pregnancy. In the years since the RHAPP was introduced, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms and other pro-life allies have been fighting—successfully—to prevent the passage of various forms of abortion expansion legislation.

As many listeners and readers will recall, the most recent effort to further liberalize New York’s abortion laws—which are already among the most permissive and outrageous in the nation—has been championed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. During his 2013 State of the State Address, Gov. Cuomo urged that New York’s abortion laws be expanded, bellowing, “‘[It’s] her body, it’s her choice.’” By the grace of God, and through the efforts of NYCF and many others, the Governor’s effort has failed.

This year, abortion advocates have not made a major push for abortion expansion. However, abortion expansion legislation (S.4432-Stewart-Cousins/A.6221-Glick) was considered in the Senate Health Committee on Wednesday, May 4. By a vote of 9-7, the bill was defeated. Sen. Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) was joined by the eight Republican Members of the Health Committee in voting against the legislation; pro-abortion Sen. Gustavo Rivera (D-Bronx) spoke in favor of the bill. As usual, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms was on the scene to express our ongoing opposition to abortion expansion.

NYCF thanks Sens. Farley, Felder, Golden, Hannon, Larkin, Little, Martins, Murphy, and Young for voting against abortion expansion last week. Christians across New York can be confident that NYCF will continue to fight for the sanctity of life in Albany.
