Late last month, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) drew the ire of Gov. Andrew Cuomo by dismissing potential federal aid to cash-strapped state and local governments as “blue state bailouts.”
In response, Gov. Cuomo lashed out at Leader McConnell, calling his remarks “‘vicious,’ ‘ugly,’ ‘irresponsible,’ and ‘reckless.’” The Governor added, “‘If there was ever a time for humanity and decency … and a time to stop your obsessive political bias and anger, now is the time.’” The Governor also (accurately) pointed out that New York contributes more federal tax dollars than it receives in return from the federal government. According to Gov. Cuomo, funding for schools and hospitals in New York could be cut by as much as 20% if the state does not receive federal aid.
Leader McConnell explained his comments this way: “‘We’re not writing a check to send down to states to allow them to, in effect, finance mistakes they’ve made unrelated to the coronavirus.’” The Senator added, “‘The fundamental point I was trying to make is that we’re not interested in borrowing money from future generations to help states solve problems that they created themselves.’”
Leader McConnell’s point is well taken. Even before the coronavirus hit, New York government was already facing a $6 billion budget deficit despite inflicting the highest overall tax burden in the country on its citizens. Also, it seems that the state still has enough money in its coffers to fund left-wing priorities. Despite the fiscal crunch, the 2020-21 New York State Budget funds Planned Parenthood and calls for $100 million in taxpayer funds to be spent on political campaigns. Furthermore, our tax dollars are used to provide Medicaid funding for nearly half of the abortions performed in New York. They are also used to pay for cross-gender hormone treatments and so-called “sex reassignment” surgeries for Medicaid recipients.
Before the State of New York pleads for fiscal relief from Washington, it should stop spending money on things that are foolish at best and evil at worst. A blue state bailout that includes unrestricted federal aid would only embolden politicians that favor big government growth.
